Way back in the 1990s — as a child! — I had a brief career as a media relations employee at The Ohio House of Representatives. My boss was the first female Speaker of the House and she enforced a very strict dress code. I dreaded the hot summer months and wearing a suit and hosiery. It was so hot and muggy; at least I didn’t have to wear a tie. I am happy to be in retail now where, well, most anything goes.
But Washington D.C. is one of the few towns where folks really do still dress up for work. Maybe it isn’t as strict as Speaker JoAnne Davidson was back in the mid-90s, but business attire is still necessary for many, or at least business casual.
We know the key to summer work wear is layers: cute tops that look great without a jacket over them. Sometimes layering pieces can be too sheer or not have enough coverage so you feel self-conscious. But when you are walking outside for your commute or maybe you head out for drinks after work, you don’t necessarily want to have on your blazer, right? These tops are perfect:
We also have some great wrap shirts and dresses that are perfect for summer when you are inside with the air conditioning turned up and, as a result, they will transition nicely into fall. The green outfit below from Tibi is one of my favorites this season. We have a great peplum sweater that will pair perfectly with it as well. Who knew green pants could be so cute?!
